Effects of Apraxia

Apraxia can be subdivided into different types:

  • Ideomotor apraxia is difficulty carrying out a motor command e.g. act like you are combing your hair. It may affect the legs (limb apraxia) or facial movements
  • Ideational apraxia is an inability to plan for the movement e.g. pick up this spoon to eat your breakfast
  • Apraxia of speech affects articulation; errors increase with longer phrases and word lengths.
  • Limb-kinetic ataxia affects precise movements of a limb
  • Gait apraxia affects ability to coordinate movements for walking
  • Constructional apraxia describes inability to draw basic configurations
  • Occulomotor apraxia is difficulty with eye movements
On a functional level apraxia can affect a person’s ability to perform basic tasks such as making a cup of tea. The person may put the teabag in the kettle instead of the mug or be unable to sequence the task at all. Apraxia may be more difficult to diagnose in the presence of other physical or cognitive problems which commonly occur alongside the condition such as aphasia (inability to produce language).
