Causes of Ataxia

Ataxia can be caused by various reasons such as:

  • Damage to the central nervous system e.g. stroke or brain tumour.
  • Vitamin B12 deficiency
  • Exogenous substances such as ethanol. Some prescription drugs may result in ataxia as a side effect such as antiepileptic drugs
  • Peripheral neuropathies may result in an isolated sensory ataxia.
  • Arnold-Chiai malformations
  • Hereditary ataxias
