Effects of Ataxia

The effects of ataxia will be dependent on the type and the area of damage. However, common features are incoordination of movement and impaired balance. Other effects include:

  • Altered walking pattern e.g. wide based unsteady gait with difficulties stopping, turning and problems walking in poorly lit areas.
  • Falls due to postural instability
  • Difficulties with tasks requiring fine control and coordination
  • Tremor during voluntary movement
  • Involuntary eye movements
  • Slurred speech
  • Altered handwriting
