The effects of ataxia will be dependent on the type and the area of damage. However, common features are incoordination of movement and impaired balance. Other effects include:
- Altered walking pattern e.g. wide based unsteady gait with difficulties stopping, turning and problems walking in poorly lit areas.
- Falls due to postural instability
- Difficulties with tasks requiring fine control and coordination
- Tremor during voluntary movement
- Involuntary eye movements
- Slurred speech
- Altered handwriting
