Physiotherapy for Erbs Palsy

Our specialist physiotherapists will provide treatment for children or adults with Erb’s palsy which will begin with a thorough assessment of the person’s limitations, range of movement, sensation and muscle strength. Your physiotherapist will then devise an individual treatment programme which may include:

  • Exercises to maintain range of movement and prevent stiffness and pain
  • Exercises to facilitate movement in the arm to regain functional use
  • Splints to maintain range of movement and prevent secondary complications
  • Sensory stimulation to improve sensation and awareness of the arm
  • Pain management techniques
  • In babies or children we will liaise closely with parents to teach them how to correctly position their child and perform the necessary exercises
  • In some cases we will refer to an Occupational therapist who can assess function in day to day activities and provide advice on specialist equipment to make life easier and maximise independence
  • Hydrotherapy treatment to work on restoring movement and strength
Benefits of physiotherapy for Erb’s palsy include:
  • Improved range of movement
  • Reduced risk of secondary complications such as stiffness and pain
  • Improved functional use of the arm
  • Improved muscle strength
  • Improved confidence and independence
