Functional weakness describes a condition where a person presents with weakness or paralysis in part of or the whole body with no identifiable damage to the neurological system. The cause of the condition is complex but may be precipitated by pain, periods of excessive rest or psychological trauma.
Diagnosis is usually made by a neurologist following a series of tests which are normal. People with functional weakness are often frustrated and upset especially if their symptoms are not seen to be believed by doctors, friends or family. It is important to acknowledge that people with functional weakness have no conscious control over their symptoms.
Reassurance is often needed to help people accept that functional weakness is a recognised condition and as there is no damage to the neurological system the prognosis is usually favourable. Physiotherapy treatment can help people with functional weakness to overcome their physical problems and recover their independence.
