What is Motor Neurone Disease?

Motor neurone disease (MND) is a term used to describe a group of related diseases that affect the motor neurones in the brain and spinal cord. Motor neurones are the nerve cells along which the brain transmits instructions to the muscles. Therefore, degeneration of the motor neurones leads to weakness and wasting of muscles.

Motor neurone disease is most common among people aged 50 to 70, and affects men slightly more than women.
