By definition Myotonia Congenita is a congenital condition causing rigidity of muscles. Myotonia Congenita has many different specific presentations but all cause failure of the muscles to relax following contraction (Myotonia).
The cause of Myotonia Congenita is genetic mutation which affects the channels responsible for opening and closing to allow the muscles to contract. In cases of MC these channels are ineffective in closing leading to the muscles being unable to stop the contraction. Physically this presents as rigidity of the muscles following an initiated movement.
Physiotherapy assists those suffering with Myotonia Congenita by facilitating normal movement patterns and helping to reduce the occurrence of prolonged contraction.
