Botulinum Toxin

Botulinum Toxin

Botox is an injection used to help decrease spasticity of the muscles in children. Spasticity is often when a neuromuscular condition diminishes the nerve impulses sent to a muscle, causing the muscles to tighten and become stiff. Such spasticity can lead to a lack of range of movement which can cause difficulties with everyday function for your child. If untreated, spasticity can cause muscles to become permanently shortened

Some of the common neuromuscular conditions which affect children are cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy and motor neuron disease.

By having a combination of botox injections and physiotherapy, it is likely that the risk of permanent deformity can be drastically reduced and functional ability improved.
