In neurological rehabilitation botox injections are a very powerful treatment tool and have substantial benefits including:
- Increased range of movement
- Increased ability to carry out functional movements with arm/leg
- Increased mobility – in bed or while walking
- Increased tolerance to manual stretches from a therapist/carer
- Reduced muscle tightness
- Reduced muscle spasm
- Reduced pain and discomfort
- Reduced physical deformity
- Reduced need for muscle lengthening surgery
- Facilitates efficient maintenance of personal hygiene - washing and dressing
- Enables the use of splint/orthotic device to maintain range of movement
- Long lasting results (3-4 months)
Botox injection therapy does not replace the need for physiotherapy. Intensive physiotherapy treatment before and after the injections is essential to achieve the best possible range of movement and functional outcome. Before the injections, your specialist neurological physiotherapist will measure your range of movement and teach you a range of stretches and strengthening exercises to do at home. After the injections, hands-on treatment may include muscle mobilisations, massage, manual stretches and practice of functional movement patterns. Research shows that muscles respond well to stretching over a prolonged period of time. Therefore serial casting, splinting, orthotics or braces may be worn to position the limb in a lengthened position for several hours at a time. All treatment is focused on achieving a target range of movement which will be re-assessed regularly in order to keep an objective record of the individual’s improvement.
