Botulinum toxin (botox) injections are used to treat a wide variety of medical problems.
At Manchester Neuro Physio, we have physiotherapists who have been specifically trained to deliver safe and effective Botox injections in order to treat tight muscles caused by:
- Stroke
- Multiple sclerosis
- Traumatic brain injury
- Spinal cord injury
- Cerebral palsy
- Motor neuron disease
- Muscular dystrophy
Individuals with spasticity due to a neurological disorder may already be taking medicine prescribed by a doctor to decrease muscle tone and tightness. Anti-spasticity medication such as baclofen works by reducing an individual’s overall tone. Botox is different in that it is injected into a specific muscle group – therefore it does not affect the muscle tone of rest of the body. Your specialist neurological physiotherapist will use an electromyography (EMG) machine in order to measure the amount of electrical activity in a muscle and pinpoint the exact location for the botox injection. Use of the EMG machine enables precise identification of the injection site.
