Botox

What is Botox?

Botulinum toxin or Botox as it is commonly known is a toxin that can be injected into muscles for cosmetic or medical purposes. Manchester Neuro Physio use Botox to treat spasticity. It is a powerful drug that temporarily relaxes the muscles. Botox is most well known for its use to relax frown lines, inhibit excessive sweating, reduce headaches and treat crossed eyes.

At Manchester Neuro Physio, Botox is used in the treatment and management of neurological conditions. Conditions such as stroke or multiple sclerosis cause tight spastic muscles in the arm or leg which can be treated with botox injections. Small injections of botox cause temporary paralysis of the muscle which means it is unable to contract and become tight. It can take up to a week to see the effects of botox and the results usually last 3-4 months. After a few months, re-injection may be required to maintain the positive results. Longer lasting results are acquired with repeated treatment. In order to achieve maximum muscle length as a result of the botox, it is essential the patient has intensive physiotherapy before and after the injection. Physiotherapy treatment after botox injections may include manual stretches, serial casting, splinting and the use of orthotics.
