Small injections of botox cause temporary paralysis of the muscle which means it is unable to contract and become tight. It can take up to a week to see the effects of botox and the results usually last 3-4 months. After a few months, re-injection may be required to maintain the positive results. Longer lasting results are acquired with repeated treatment. In order to achieve maximum muscle length as a result of the botox, it is essential the patient has intensive physiotherapy before and after the injection. Physiotherapy treatment after botox injections may include manual stretches, serial casting, splinting and the use of orthotics.
