School Visit

Manchester Neuro Physio are able to provide paediatric physiotherapy assessments and treatment at your child’s school. This can be as a one-off assessment and advice session or ongoing treatment. These services can be provided in any type of school including independent schools and nurseries, mainstream schools and schools for children with special educational or physical needs.

This service is often utilised by the parents of children that do not receive NHS physiotherapy and those that wish to supplement NHS physiotherapy input. Seeing your child at school can allow the specialist paediatric physiotherapists at Manchester Neuro Physio to educate classroom staff regarding your child’s condition, what they can do to help, therapeutic handling and exercise programmes for your child. These programmes can be continued by classroom staff between physiotherapy sessions to maximise your child’s potential.

By seeing your child at school, the physiotherapist will be able to witness the problems that your child is experiencing on a daily basis. From this your physiotherapist can give advice regarding aids and / or adaptations to enable your child to regain or retain as much independence as possible and increase their quality of life.

During school visits the physiotherapists at Manchester Neuro Physio involve and educate all class based staff to help your child reach his / her potential. The type of assessment and subsequent treatment is largely dependent on the nature and severity of your child’s condition.

Children are generally assessed in areas of:

  • mobility
  • balance
  • co-ordination
  • change of position
  • joint range
  • muscle strength and tone
  • function
  • independence
Other assessments will be carried out, if required, such as:
  • mobility equipment assessments (for sticks, walkers etc.)
  • orthoses assessments
  • wheelchair assessments
  • static seating / pressure assessments

If ongoing physiotherapy is required in a school setting, the level of physiotherapy will be agreed between the pupil, parents, staff and the therapists after the assessment and an individual physiotherapy programme will then be written. The programme is usually implemented on a daily basis by classroom staff that have been trained by the physiotherapist. Your physiotherapist will change and progress the individual programme at regular review sessions to suit future goals.

The physiotherapists at Manchester Neuro Physio will also, where appropriate, assess your child regarding:

The physiotherapists at Manchester Neuro Physio are experienced at assessing children for the most appropriate equipment for both their physical and educational needs, and recommending the most appropriate level of physiotherapy input. They can assess your child and write a report that can be used to obtain funding from the either the school or local council for equipment and / or increased physiotherapy input.
