Introduction to Apraxia

Apraxia is a condition affecting a person’s ability to perform planned movements despite having the physical ability to do so and the desire to complete the task. It is described as a disorder of motor planning that may be acquired due to damage to the brain (e.g. stroke or brain tumour) or as a result of problems with development.

Living with apraxia can be frustrating for both the person and their families. Physiotherapy can help to improve the difficulties associated with apraxia by providing advice on cueing strategies and task practice to increase performance of key everyday tasks.
