Diagnosis of ME / Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

No medical test can confirm the diagnosis of chronic fatigue syndrome. Your GP will normally arrive at a diagnosis of chronic fatigue syndrome by taking a medical history and may perform tests to rule out other conditions with similar symptoms. A number of visits to your GP may be required before a definite diagnosis is reached.

Initially it can be frightening to receive a diagnosis of chronic fatigue syndrome; however, diagnosis is an important stage in the recovery process. Following diagnosis individuals can come to terms with chronic fatigue syndrome and understand the illness. For others, diagnosis can come as a welcome relief after long periods of worry about what could be causing the symptoms.
