Effects of ME / Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Chronic fatigue syndrome affects people in a number of different ways. There are many symptoms and these often change during the course of the illness. Most people do not experience them all.

Common symptoms include:

  • Persistent tiredness
  • Feeling generally unwell
  • Muscle and joint pain
  • Sleep difficulties
  • Concentration difficulties and memory problems
  • Problems with the digestive system
  • Problems with the nervous system
Tiredness is often noticed after completing tasks that did not previously make you feel tired. This tiredness can take a couple of days to kick in and is not relieved by rest.

Pain is a common symptom of chronic fatigue syndrome and is often described as an aching sensation in the muscles and joints. Pins and needles, muscle twitching, headaches and migraines are commonly experienced.

Sleep disturbance can present as sleeping excessively, not being able to sleep, waking feeling unrefreshed and sleeping during the day.

Digestive symptoms can present as nausea, reduced appetite, indigestion, bloating, flatulence, stomach cramps and intermittent diarrhoea and constipation.

Chronic fatigue syndrome can develop into chronic and disabling illness. A combination of the common symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome such as fatigue, pain and sleep disturbance can, in some cases, result in depression.
