The effects of CMT disease will vary from person to person due to the many different subtypes of the disorder, however characteristic features include:
- Muscle weakness and wasting of the muscles
- Foot drop (difficulty lifting the foot when walking)
- High arches in the foot with claw toes
- Frequent tripping and altered balance
- Reduced sensation
- Poor coordination
- Weakness in the arms affecting fine motor skills and ability to lift the arms
- Tremor in the limbs
- In some cases breathing and speech may also be affected
Symptoms usually develop in childhood or early adulthood, however in some cases the onset of the condition may not be apparent until early thirties.
