Accurate diagnosis between the types of dementia is generally performed by a specialist neurologist or geriatrician. However, there are brief tests that can be performed to evaluate a patient’s cognitive status.
CT or MRI scans are sometimes performed, although these are often not sensitive enough to detect early changes associated with dementia. By the time changes could be noticed on a scan, a diagnosis can be made on the physical and cognitive symptoms alone.
