What is Dementia?

Dementia is the gradual decline in cognitive function due to damage or disease in the brain beyond that expected from normal aging. Memory, attention, language and problem solving are particularly affected. In the later stages of the condition, individuals with dementia may be disorientated in time, place and in person. They will also experience a reduction in mobility and an increased risk of falls. There are lots of different types of dementia, each with their own causes.

Dementia generally affects older people and becomes increasingly common with age. Approximately 1 in 15 of those over the age of 65 will develop a degree of dementia, increasing to about 1 in 5 of those over the age of 85. Younger people can develop dementia but it is less common, affecting about 1 in 1,000 of those under 65.
