As with many neurological conditions the exact presentation of symptoms in people with Friedreich’s ataxia will vary. The symptoms usually appear gradually becoming more noticeable over time. They typically include:
- Muscle weakness in the limbs particularly the legs
- Reduced balance and coordination causing frequent tripping and falls
- Stumbling gait pattern, mobility becomes more difficult
- Impaired vision
- Impaired hearing
- Impaired speech
- High arches in the foot
- Possible curvature of the spine
- May be associated with a diagnosis of diabetes in 20% of cases
- Heart disorders in up to 91% of cases
It has been observed that many patients reach a plateau in their symptoms in early adulthood.
The effects of Friedreich’s ataxia can impact significantly on a person’s quality of life and here at Manchester Neuro Physio we aim to maximise your potential to help you maintain your function and independence for as long as possible.
