Physiotherapy for Hemiparesis

Our specialist neurological physiotherapists will perform a thorough assessment of your needs in order to determine the most appropriate treatment programme and goals for you. Treatment will vary according to the level of weakness. In severe cases initial treatment may focus on being able to sit unsupported with the correct alignment. In all cases treatment will aim to maximise your potential and may include:

  • Exercises to improve muscle strength to facilitate functional use of your arm or leg
  • Facilitation of normal patterns of movement
  • Exercises to improve hand function and dexterity
  • Exercises to improve your trunk control and core stability
  • Exercises to maintain or improve range of movement
  • Gait re-education and provision of walking aids to improve your independence and safety
  • Exercises to improve your balance and co-ordination
  • Home assessment to advise on appropriate equipment or aids which may be useful to improve your independence
  • Liaison with your family or carers on the best ways to assist you with day to day activities
  • Referral to Occupational Therapists or Speech Therapists if necessary
  • Hydrotherapy treatment to work on improving muscle strength and mobility
Many people with hemiparesis go on to make significant improvements with physiotherapy; our physiotherapists will provide the necessary reassurance and support that you need to improve your quality of life.
