Physiotherapy for Idiopathic diseases

Physiotherapy treatment for IIDDs will depend on the specific presentation of your condition. IIDD’s may affect you in different ways. Commonly they will affect your strength, balance and mobility which are key areas that physiotherapy can help address. Your physiotherapist will conduct a thorough assessment of your needs in order to establish appropriate goals and an individual treatment programme. Treatment may include:

  • Exercises to improve muscle strength
  • Exercises to improve range of movement and reduce stiffness
  • Facilitation of normal movement patterns
  • Positioning advice to manage increased muscle tone or spasticity
  • Exercises to improve balance and reduce risk of falls
  • Gait re-education to improve the quality of your walking pattern and independence
  • Advice regarding appropriate walking aids to maximise your function
  • Provision of orthotics to improve the quality of your walking pattern
  • Home assessment to establish appropriate equipment to maximise your function
  • Pain management techniques
  • Hydrotherapy treatment if appropriate
  • Referral to Occupational therapy and Speech therapy if necessary
We understand the impact that IIDDs can have on your life and those around you; we will aim to reduce the effects as far as possible to keep you active and independent.
