Treatment of meningioma depends upon a number of factors such as the size, type and location of the tumor, the stage of growth and the patient’s symptoms/general health. In some cases medical treatment for meningioma may not be appropriate at all.
Management of meningioma will involve a number of medical professionals who specialize in the treatment of cancer including a neurosurgeon, a neurologist and an oncologist. Other health professionals that may have therapeutic input include a specialist nurse, a clinical psychologist, a physiotherapist, an occupational therapist and a speech and language therapist.
Your treatment for meningioma will take place in the hospital, outpatient and community setting. Specific details of your treatment plan will be discussed with you. The options include surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy or a ‘watch and wait’ approach. Where possible, the meningioma is surgically removed and then radiotherapy used to destroy any remaining cancer cells. If surgery is not possible due to the location of the meningioma, radiotherapy is the preferred alternative treatment modality. Chemotherapy is the use of anti-cancer medication to destroy the meningioma. The ‘watch and wait’ approach is used when the individual has no signs and symptoms or when the tumor is growing very slowly. The meningioma can be observed carefully using regular MRI scans and this may be preferred by the elderly who decline more aggressive treatment.
