Myasthenia Gravis is an autoimmune disorder causing apparent fatiguing of the muscles of those people who are affected. Muscle fatigue can affect different combinations of muscle groups and tends to be worse following activity of the affected muscles or at the end of the day.
The cause of Myasthenia Gravis is thought to be antibodies produced by the body which prevent efficient binding of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, needed to initiate muscle contraction at the neuromuscular junction. This blocking of acetylcholine prevents normal contraction of the muscles and presents as weakness in the sufferer.
Physiotherapy assists those suffering with Myasthenia Gravis by working to maintain muscle strength, utilise warm up effects to reduce its impact and promote independence.
