Microcephaly

Microcephaly

Microcephaly is a rare neurological condition which results in an infant's head to be smaller than other children the same age and gender, this can occur in the womb or after birth but is a result of the brain growing abnormally.

It can be a congenital condition (present from birth) or it can occur later in infancy. It often causes learning disabilities and neurological conditions.

Physiotherapy is very important for children who experience symptoms such as:

  • Mild to significant learning disabilities
  • Motor dysfunction
  • Difficulty with proprioception (awareness of body in space), balance, and movement
  • Seizures

Here at Manchester Neuro Physio we understand there is no cure for Microcephaly, and that it isn't possible to restore a child's brain to normal size and appearance, but our Specialist Neuro Paediatric Physio's can provide specialist treatments to help improve your child's symptoms, function and quality of life.
