The Benefits of Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES)

Functional Electrical Stimulation has many benefits. When used on the lower limb to allow the muscles in the leg to lift the foot to combat ‘drop foot’ is can:

  • Prevent your toes from catching when walking
  • Improve your walking pattern, quality and speed
  • Reduce the effort needed to walk
  • Improve your balance
  • Reduce your chances of tripping / falling
  • Allow you to walk further
  • Improve muscle strength
  • Increase the options of footwear as it is not bulky like many AFOs
FES can also be used to:
  • Improve upper limb function
  • Reduce spasticity (tightness in your muscles)
