Neurological physiotherapy is the treatment of patients who have a neurological disorder. Neurological disorders are those affecting the brain, spinal cord and nerves; such as stroke, MS and Parkinson's disease.
Neurological physiotherapists are experienced in treating neurological patients and attend courses specific to neurological physiotherapy to further their knowledge in this area.
How does neurological physiotherapy differ from other physiotherapy?
When the nervous system is damaged muscles may feel weak and floppy or very tight with spasms or tremor and movement may be uncoordinated. Along with movement disorders there may be altered sensation and problems with speech and swallowing.
Your initial assessment will consist of a full physical assessment and a detailed account of your past medical history and previous mobility. Physiotherapy goals will then be set between you and your physiotherapist (and, if appropriate, your family or carers) before treatment is started. Treatment can be carried out in our clinic or your home setting to accommodate the needs of you, your family or care arrangements and, if appropriate, your schooling.
Treatment is specific to you, and involves methods to overcome your physical problems such as stretching, strengthening, balance and walking practice (if appropriate), postural awareness and control, respiratory assessment and education. Advice and recommendations will also be given on suitable walking aids and home adaptations / equipment. Treatment programmes vary depending on your symptoms and condition. The majority of patients are seen once or twice a week and complete a home exercise programme between treatment sessions. If required, Manchester Neuro Physio are able to provide daily physiotherapy treatment or maintenance physiotherapy of one or two sessions per month.
With your consent, Manchester Neuro Physio will liaise directly with your GP and other relevant medical professionals.
The physiotherapists at Manchester Neuro Physio can offer treatment and advice at any stage of a condition; sometimes early treatment can prevent the progression of a condition and prevent secondary complications. In some cases, although conditions may progress over time, there can still be gains by having physiotherapy to improve quality of life and promote independence.
