What is Transverse Myelitis?

Transverse myelitis (TM) is an inflammatory response that causes damage to the spinal cord. This results in varying degrees of weakness, sensory alterations and autonomic dysfunction below the level of the damage.

Transverse myelitis is a rare disorder. Approximately 4 new cases per million people per year are diagnosed. Transverse myelitis can affect people of all ages, however, it is most common between the ages of 10 and 19, and 30 and 39.
