What is ME / Chronic Fatigue Syndrome?

Chronic fatigue syndrome can affect all types of people at any age. It is estimated that 250,000 people in the United Kingdom are affected by ME. Common symptoms are severe fatigue, aching muscles and joints, sleep disturbance, gastric upsets and reduced memory and concentration.

The cause of chronic fatigue syndrome is uncertain. Onset is sometimes linked to a viral infection, operation or accident. Some people, however, experience a slow, gradual onset.

There are many names for the conditions commonly known as chronic fatigue syndrome. These include:

  • Myalgic Encephalopathy (ME)
  • Myalgic Encephalomyelitis
  • Post-Viral Fatigue Syndrome
  • Chronic Fatigue Immune Dysfunction Syndrome
