Effects of Friedreichs ataxia

As with many neurological conditions the exact presentation of symptoms in people with Friedreich's ataxia will vary. The symptoms usually appear gradually becoming more noticeable over time. They typically include:

  • Muscle weakness in the limbs particularly the legs
  • Reduced balance and coordination causing frequent tripping and falls
  • Stumbling gait pattern, mobility becomes more difficult
  • Impaired vision
  • Impaired hearing
  • Impaired speech
  • High arches in the foot
  • Possible curvature of the spine
  • May be associated with a diagnosis of diabetes in 20% of cases
  • Heart disorders in up to 91% of cases

It has been observed that many patients reach a plateau in their symptoms in early adulthood.

The effects of Friedreich's ataxia can impact significantly on a person's quality of life and here at Manchester Neuro Physio we aim to maximise your potential to help you maintain your function and independence for as long as possible.
