Physiotherapy for Kennedys disease

Physiotherapy for Kennedys disease

Physiotherapy treatment will depend on your specific needs and impairments. Your physiotherapist will perform a thorough assessment of your physical problems and will devise an individual treatment programme for you. Treatment may include:

  • Exercises to improve muscle strength
  • Exercises to maintain range of movement and reduce muscle stiffness
  • Advice regarding appropriate walking aids to maximise your independence and safety
  • Provision of orthotics to improve the quality of your walking pattern
  • Home assessment to advise on equipment to assist you with day to day activities
  • Advice regarding seating and positioning to maintain posture
  • Pain management techniques
  • Balance re-education and advice regarding falls prevention
  • Teaching your family or carers on how best to assist you with transfers, mobility and completing your exercise programme
  • Breathing exercises and chest clearance techniques to maintain a clear chest
  • Referral to Occupational therapy and Speech therapy if necessary
  • Hydrotherapy treatment if appropriate to work on strength, balance, mobility and aid relaxation

As this condition is progressive your needs may change over time. Our physiotherapists will support you throughout your condition and will help anticipate problems before they arise in order to reduce the chance if unnecessary problems. We can also provide treatment at home if it becomes more difficult to access our clinics. We will liaise with NHS doctors or therapists if necessary with your consent to manage your care most effectively.
