What is VRT

What is VRT

Vestibular rehabilitation (VRT) is an exercise based therapy program provided by neurological physiotherapists in the treatment of problems with the inner ear. The vestibular system is a set of organs inside the ear which are involved in feeling balanced and in a state of equilibrium.

Individuals with inner ear disorders complain of dizziness, vertigo, headaches and feeling unbalanced when they are standing up and moving around. The symptoms are often worse in a moving vehicle, in certain head positions and when looking around quickly.

At Manchester Neuro Physio, our experienced clinicians can deliver a high standard of VRT in the clinic or home environment. Treatment will involve canal repositioning manaoevures and/or strengthening the vestibular system, depending on diagnosis. Individuals will be taught exercises to do at home that will alleviate and reduce the symptoms of dizziness and vertigo. These exercises are specific to the individual but will involve moving your eyes, head and neck and must be carried out several times a day. Over a period of weeks, your physiotherapist will progress your exercises to make them more difficult and further challenge your vestibular system. With time, your vestibular system will be re-trained and your symptoms will diminish.
