Spinal Cord Injury

Spinal Cord Injury

Spinal cord injuries in children account for around 5% of all individuals who experience a spinal cord injury. Spinal cord Injuries mainly result from trauma. This trauma causes bruises, incomplete or complete tears of the spinal cord. Damage to the spinal cord can causes sensation loss and loss of muscle power below the level of the injury. If it is a partial tear you may only feel the weakness/ paraesthesia and sensory loss on one side of the body. Spinal cord injury can be due to things pressing on the spinal cord such as tumour growing in the spinal canal.

The aims of physiotherapy treatment will vary depending on the level of the spinal cord, the type of tear and how long ago your child had the injury.
