Introduction to Guillian-Barre Syndrome

Guillian-Barre syndrome (GBS) affects the nerves which connect the body to the spinal cord and brain, these are called peripheral Nerves. In GBS your body breaks down the protein around the nerves which helps them send and receive messages. Damage to these nerves can cause weakness and maybe paralysis of the muscles in the arms, legs, face and respiratory muscles.

Manchester Neuro Physio provide further rehabilitation for patients with Guillian-Barre syndrome once they have been discharged from hospital. We aim to maximise your potential to make a full recovery. Recovery times vary depending on how quickly the disease is treated it can vary from two weeks to two years.

Our neurological paediatric physiotherapists understand that Guillian-Barre syndrome affects everyone differently and can be really upsetting for you and your child. Our physiotherapists can provide fun treatment sessions with home based exercise programmes, focused on achieving your child's rehabilitation goals.
