Rotationplasty

Rotationplasty

Rotationplasty of the lower extremity is a surgical procedure for children undergoing a resection of a malignant bone tumour of the femur and is an alternative to surgery treatment for prosthesis. It is most commonly used in young patients who have bone cancer of the distal femur. The cancerous bone is removed and the tibia and ankle joint replace the knee. The function of the toes allows sensory feedback which travels to the brain in addition to allowing more function for sport and activity. Most patients find the functional benefits of this type of treatment outweigh the physical appearance.
