What is hypermobility?

Joint hypermobility in children is a term used to describe joints that are more flexible than normal. This occurs when the structures surrounding the joint such as ligaments, tendons and the joint capsule which normally provide support are more easily stretched than usual. General Hypermobility can be normal and is evident in ballet dancers or gymnasts, but some children with hypermobile joints have difficulty performing certain movements due to pain or instability.
