Children's Electrotherapy

Children's Electrotherapy

At Manchester Neuro Physio, Electrotherapy is often used in the treatment of muscle weakness and pain caused by different neurological conditions. It involves applying an electric current to the affected area in order to reduce pain and swelling and accelerate healing.

Not all Electrotherapy modalities are suitable for children and so your specialist Physiotherapists will determine the most appropriate treatment. The type of electrotherapy treatment your child receives will also be dependent on their stage of healing and individual injury. It is thought that electrotherapy offers the best outcomes when combined with other techniques such as exercise.

Most commonly, Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) is used by our specialist physiotherapists at Manchester Neuro Physio on children. Other electrotherapy techniques may also be used in treatment in order to enhance or initiate tissue repair.

FES is commonly used to strengthen very weak muscle groups. It may be possible, in cases such as a nerve injury, FES can be used in order to speed up the nerves recovery and maintain muscle strength. Other benefits or FES include pain relief, wound repair and reduction of swelling. Common conditions treated using FES include foot drop, Bell's palsy and peripheral nerve injuries.
